Orientation Day

October 1st, 2009 · 3 Comments · Uncategorized

So yesterday officially marked the start of my 4-month Artist-in-Residency at the SF Recycling & Disposal Center (aka “The Dump”). We kicked things off by signing a bunch of confidential paperwork followed by a second tour of the facility where I will be spending most of my time digging for treasures.

My new home for 4 months

Inside the facility

Micah helping us getting to know the work space.

Fellow artist Christina Mazza and I will share a 2,000 square foot warehouse art studio with more tools than Bob Vila to do whatever our hearts content. Our only concern is running out of time. From what I have been told, there are so many great things that get thrown away every day at the dump that it gets hard to narrow it down. Wish me luck as I embark on an adventure that will change my life.

that is super cool. can’t wait to see what you find and what you make out of it.

is it weird that i’m wondering if you ever get used to the smell of garbage though.

Yeah, can’t wait either. Strangely enough the smell is not that bad. Usually the big question is if people ever come across body parts, but thankfully that hasn’t happened here….yet.

ah, body parts. didn’t think of that.

must be a wake up call to see home much shit we all go through and throw away and waste. i’ve been to the same kind of place here in atlanta and its sorta mind boggling how much “stuff” goes through every day.

best of luck on the residency!
